How do modern-day heroes measure up against ancient heroes? Explain using examples.

Today what people think of as “heroes” are fire fighters, police officers, army veterans, and even their parents, but what were heroes back in ancient times? My guess would be that they were warriors and maybe even still parents back then. So even from back then to now we still kind of have the same thought about what heroes are. People that protect other people or anything for that matter. Just like in today’s times heroes could be anybody that had a living heart. Back then they probably had higher standards to be a recognizable hero but still the same idea.
I think that society's portrayal of a hero has changed in many was from that of the ancient heroes of history. In modern times heroes are classified as a person who does what's right and helps inspire people to be good Samaritans. On the other hand, the heroes of the ancient times are shown as men who have brute force, and can complete physically demanding tasks that were set before them. Our thought of a hero also reflects our mindset on who should be the leaders of a part of society. In the older times the thought of who was fit to lead was someone who could, for instance, slay a great beast. Now we see a leader as someone who can make the right decisions and influence people in a beneficial direction. Whether it be the brute force of slaying an animal, or being a powerful speaker and making good decisions; they are both great qualities of a hero and should be recognized as just that.
The hero of today no longer fights great beasts or conquers mighty empires. Todays heroes fight fires, volcanoes, power-plants and terrorism. In reality nothing has changed except the "beast" they fight. In 480 BC, a Persian force force of 7,000 men marched into the pass of Thermopylae. In their path were 300 Spartans. Their goal was to delay the army of Xerxes. They succeeded and stopped the Persians for 7 days but at the cost of their lives. On March 11 2011, 50 engineers marched into their own battle. After the earthquake in Japan the Fukushima power plant's cooling systems were destroyed. These men risked their lives for the safety of their country. Both sets of heroes went forth to defend their countries without though of their own lives.
I agree with Justin. I think that heros today are more of people who do what's right and fair and help those in need. Or people who take time from there day to volunteer or to just help. When back in ancient times the heros were warriors and just people who were stronger.
